Fresh off the heels of a massive European tour the Hollywood Vampires returned to the United States to complete their tour with a very small run of dates that kicked off with a SOLD OUT show at the Boch Center in Boston.
In the world of the rock there are few super groups in history that compare to the might of the Hollywood Vampires. At this point in their "career" the hybrid powerhouse band has put out two full length albums full of both stunning covers and heavy-infused original material. While the band may have only officially formed in the past decade it's talented cast of "vampires" are no stranger to the road as the group features a star studded main line up Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry & Tommy Henriksen - with an equally talented supporting cast behind them of Glen Sobel, Chris Wyse, & Buck Johnson.
As the clock marched on towards the band's arrival on stage you could sense the anticipation and excitement within the crowd as many had waited for this show for some time. For many, this would be their first time seeing this iconic group perform together, for many they were excited to see this powerhouse of a rock show once more and for everyone they were eager that the night was here at last after it was postponed from May to July to allow for Depp to recover from a hairline fraction in his foot. A massive presence of video cameras, warning signs that the night was being filmed for something and a gigantic camera crane took the crowd's fever to an even higher level as slowly they became aware the night was going to be truly something special for all involved.
As the lights flashed dark and the crowd screamed with a fever pitch they truly did manage to "Raise The Dead" as the band strutted out confidently on stage to kick night off with an original song from their discography before moving quickly into a stunning Alice Cooper cover if you can even call it that with him performing on it. Through out the night the many vampires on stage traded off the spotlight on vocal duties and even shared many of the iconic guitar solos along the way. The band's sprawling 19 song setlist was a rock n' roll master class that allowed them to split the spotlight between their own originals as the Hollywood Vampires, some covers they helped produce and a few covers they have been performing out of their love of the music.
The mainstay highlights included the closing run of Aerosmith songs from "Bright Light Fright" and "Walk This Way" that parlayed into a powerful closer with "School's Out" that had the crowd going wild. However along the way other moments shined brighter than the big hits of the set os Depp stole the spotlight for a hauntingly beautiful cover of "Heroes" that received a massive standing ovation. Depp also wowed the crowd with the band's cover of "People Who Died" that featured many of the band's fallen friends - Perry would later revisit this thread in touching tribute to Jeff Back that left the crowd stunned.
From start to finish the Hollywood Vampires showcased that while this is a side project for them all from their other success it is no joke and they demand to be taken seriously with the halls of rock fame. Combined on stage the band could easily fight for the title of most talent on the road for a single tour and yet all of them had smiles on their faces like this was their first tour, in their first band, fresh out of the garage. It may have been later than orginally planned but to no one's surprise the Hollywood Vampires rose and delivered for their fans in Boston.
